How many porta potties do I need for my event?
An event needs 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests for up to 4 hours. A 200-guest party needs 4 units. Add 1 unit per 150 guests for each extra 4 hours, and 1 unit per 150 guests when alcohol is served. Make 5% of units wheelchair-accessible at public events, and add 1 hand-wash station per 2 toilets when food is served.
Porta potty chart by guest count and hours
This porta potty chart shows standard units needed by guest count and event length, using our planning method. A 100-guest, 4-hour party needs 2 units. A 300-guest, 8-hour event with alcohol needs 10 units. Round up whenever your guest count falls between rows.
| Guests | Up to 4 h | 4–8 h | Up to 4 h + alcohol | 4–8 h + alcohol |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 75 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 4 | 6 | 6 | 8 |
| 250 | 5 | 7 | 7 | 9 |
| 300 | 6 | 8 | 8 | 10 |
| 400 | 8 | 11 | 11 | 14 |
| 500 | 10 | 14 | 14 | 18 |
Method and assumptions: guests ÷ 50, rounded up, covers a 4-hour event. Each extra 4-hour block adds guests ÷ 150, rounded up. Alcohol adds guests ÷ 150, rounded up. This is Travis Rental Works's planning method built from what we see at event pickups; it is not a legal standard.
How do I adjust the count for alcohol, food and accessibility?
Adjusting a porta potty count takes three whole-number steps. If the table says 3 units and alcohol is served, add 1 unit for every 150 guests. If food is served, add 1 hand-wash station for every 2 toilets. If the event is public, make at least 5% of toilets in each cluster accessible, and never fewer than one.
Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, bar
- 150 ÷ 50 = 3 units for 4 hours.
- Event runs 1 hour over 4: add 150 ÷ 150 = 1 unit.
- Bar is open: add 1 unit.
- Total: 5 units. Food is served, so add 3 hand-wash stations (5 ÷ 2, rounded up) or choose deluxe units with sinks.
Accessibility rule: 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. See wheelchair-accessible units.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site with 20 or fewer workers needs 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. From 21 to 199 workers, the site needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal for every 40 workers. From 200 workers up, the site needs 1 seat and 1 urinal for every 50. A standard unit has one of each.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1) | Standard units |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 toilet | 1 |
| 21–40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 1 (seat + urinal in one unit) |
| 41–80 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 2 |
| 81–120 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 3 |
| 121–199 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 4–5 |
| 200+ | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 workers | workers ÷ 50, rounded up |
